we had an interesting time during the klang valley michaelian alumni dinner. promoted the drama with the help of teachers and retired teachers. it was encouraging to see the old boys continue showing their support for their alma mater.

art briefing
discussed with ibrahim regarding the sets and props under his guidance. will wait for the lower sixes to register before redirecting them to him.
sectional discussions may seen a little early considering the lower sixes have yet to arrive, but i rather pass the baton ahead of time to the respective teachers so there will be less load on my mind.

oh...no, here she comes again
made another trip to kamdar - the last one i hope. i think i've finally purchased all the materials needed. as usual i headed down to the basement where the cheap stuff are. then i immediately zoomed to the cheeeeapest of the cheap section. i was greeted by the staff who were probably getting bored seeing me there so very often.
bored seeing me? eh, may not necessary be so. actually a couple of weeks back they witnessed a hilarious display of 'insanity'. imagine this scenario. i rampaged through a pile of remnant cloth - digging in, pulling out, draping cloth over me to measure the length of greek robes, viewing myself at those pillar mirrors...... well, let's just say, i made their day much less monotonous!

look! this is our design! 3A7 should be proud of their classmates, Low Zhe Kai and Fredson He, who combined their efforts to bag the winning award for "Best Drama Poster Design". with this win, their design will be used for this year's drama posters, flyers and souvenir programs.
the gleams on their faces are genuine. after all it's not every day you get your creation used so extensively!

klang valley SMI alumni dinner gathering
sons of st michael's who now reside around kl and klang valley will host an annual dinner on 28 april.
the school will take this opportunity to update the old boys on this year's musical. without doubt the mention of michaelian plays will bring back fond memories.
two years ago during their annual dinner i spoke to a group of old boys who each proudly named the play of their year. some were nostalgic in their description of the various roles they played. it was then that i realised the significant task i was to undertake in upholding this grand tradition.

awaiting the arrival
an old michaelianit was confirmed by the ministry that the lower sixes will register on the 15 of may. which means, according to our school orientation program, the lower six audition will be held on the 17.
there's when i will have a slot to introduce to them the play and encourage them to sign up. they are expected to make up about 70% of the production team.
right after that the whole preparation will take bountiful leaps in speed and intensity.
the force is near!

do - re - mi
having a fun photo session before loosing their nerves.....
2nd audition for form 1 and form 4 boys. many were nervous, which is much expected coz they need to sing !! having your friends trying to contain their laughter didn't help matters either. but they all tried hard. that's for sure.
so i spent a good part of an hour listening to a variety of tunes ranging from nursery rhymes to pop ballad. besides belting out a song they also had to go through a pitching check.
now, now ...... who's in ???

hitting some notes
leong wai hong and nicholas ling, both form 4 boys, have signed up to join the music team. when asked 'bout their feelings towards the forthcoming play, their reply was, "we can't wait for the practices to start!"
in a month's time, ling lidy who is the music director will take these boys under her wings.

dinosaur age
two days ago i was approached by a young lad, obviously shortlisted for 2nd audition. he came with a worried look. apparently he prefered to sing in malay. since the play is in english, i insisted he had to prepare an english number for the audition. tis increased his displeasure as he commended that he knows no english songs.
then, i suggested the obvious - one, i thought could not possibly go wrong. the happy birthday song!
with undisguised disgust, came his reply, "that's OLD SKOOL!!!".
for a split second, i almost felt ancient !!!

of posters and t-shirts
glad that we had finalised the poster design and have proceeded with the printing. the posters should be ready by end of next week. we would then proudly reveal the winner!
moving up next is the drama t-shirt design competition. quite a number of boys have shown their eagerness to design this year's t-shirts. the competition dateline is next tuesday. can't wait to see their artistic creations ........

teachers are working hard
while the students are getting excited with poster designing and auditions, the teachers are also busying themselves with the preparation.
things are moving smoothly, thanks michaelian teachers!
- lawrence has received his props and sets requirements and he is putting on his thinking cap.
- chong ck is following closely the process of obtaining permit from the land office.
- fairoz has arranged for tickets to be printed.
- peter has started discussion with the printers regarding the posters.
- adi is pestering me for the backdrop design. he is keen to start.

i was greatly entertained by 63 talented boys during the form 1 audition. they were all very excited to show off their acting skills. and acting skills they do have! well, a little raw maybe, but give it some polish ... hah, oscar award winners we will have!!!
now the real tough part is for me to shortlist them for next week's second audition.

unsure
today we had sports at the stadium. while i was busy running my DBI duty (cleaning stadium) a boy, came up to me. wanted to know what the audition's all about. wish i could clarify for him but i was busy getting boys to pick up rubbish. mind you, that's no easy task.
so what is expected in the audition?
just a simple show of acting skills will do. choose a topic that could show expressiveness. for example 'a long' demanding for payment, tell of your happiest day, tell of your visit to a haunted house, etc.

form 1 audition
so far, nine form 1 application lists came back to me. not waiting for the missing one. going ahead with the 1st round of auditions. response look good. they always do, coming from the younger ones. in fact they seem more brave and determined as compared to the older ones. i find auditioning form 1 'kids' rather entertaining.
the audition will be held on tues (10 april) between 1.30 - 2.45pm according to the 5 groups. this time round, i'm using the art room for a quieter surrounding. last year was real challenging having to conduct it outside the library! again? no thanks!!

cases coming in
aha .... surprise, surprise. went around the school food court and collected more than 30 egg cases. think that's much faster than getting from students - hence, the abandoned plan.
trust me, it hadn't been as easy as it sounds. quiet embarrasing actually having to ask for the cases especially from stalls which i hardly patronise!! gotta be thick skin and all. sigh....
anyway, the design for the 'x' costumes are getting clearer now. have worked out the basics and the rest will be left to the creativity of wardrobe girls. creativity of students always surprises me! i'm waiting for some good ones again.
pretty glad to have one down and another handful more to go!!
